The Superheroes of Victoria Volunteer Society began as a small group of volunteers organizing a charitable event in support of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s “Be A Superhero” campaign. Our creative volunteers decided there was no better way to support such a wonderful program than with real superheroes. So, we got to work making costumes by hand and created the first Superheroes event in August 2009: the First Annual Superhero Photo Shoot! With a small stage set up in the middle of Mayfair Shopping Centre, people lined up to get their picture taken with the Justice League, with 100% of the proceeds going to the BCCHF. Since then, the Superheroes of Victoria Volunteer Society has become a free volunteer resource available to over 50 charitable organizations and community groups, and that list continues to grow.

Our mandate isn’t to fundraise for ourselves, but to support others. We help raise money and awareness for charitable causes, assist with logistics and planning of events, and provide extra out-of-costume hands wherever needed. Our local superhero-themed charity is comprised entirely of volunteers and is a strong advocate of volunteerism in our communities and a positive body image for all volunteers. We also run a Superhero Literacy Tour with local schools and libraries, organize a Junior Superheroes volunteering and mentorship program, and make regular visits to the Pediatrics wing of Victoria General Hospital.
This city is full of superheroes helping in many different ways and we’re so proud of each and every one of our volunteers for sharing so much of their time and talent. That’s why we call them Supers.
We aren’t a registered charity, but we are an incorporated non-profit society. As such, we aren’t funded by any grants and we don’t accept monetary donations from charity and community groups for what we do. We are very fortunate to receive the occasional donation from individuals or private organizations. In-kind donations of supplies, materials, and services we need to continue doing good in the community are also useful, and appreciated. We always encourage our supporters to donate directly to the charities we support. However, if you do want to contribute to our work — hospital visits, literacy programs, community events, charity runs, seniors support, and more — we’ve set up a way for you to donate. Funds will be used for annual costume repair and replacement (there’s always battle damage to deal with!), travel expenses, and small items to giveaway at events.
Since the group’s creation, our Founder/Director has paid expenses out of his pocket. The Superheroes and what they do have always been his passion and it has been his pleasure to ensure the work continues.
Thank you for believing in us!
